The Story of Sampannee Thai
Sampannee Thai is a dream brought to life by Mama Kate, a talented chef who was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. At just 16 years old, Mama Kate honed her culinary skills at the prestigious Thai Royal Culinary School at The Grand Palace, learning from royal chefs.
This deep connection to Thailand’s culinary traditions is reflected in every dish we serve today, making us your go-to place for authentic Thai cuisine in Washington, DC.
A Royal Culinary Mission
While studying, Mama Kate had the rare honor of presenting Sampannee, a cherished Thai dessert, to King Rama IX—an experience that deeply shaped her culinary journey. In Thai, Sampannee means “a beloved dessert for a beloved person,” symbolizing heartfelt affection. After moving to the U.S., she found Thai cuisine in the DMV lacked authenticity. Determined to share the real taste of Thailand, she set out to bring REAL Thai food, made by a Thai immigrant family, to the community.
